Spotify India Hikes Premium Prices by Up to 28%

If you’re a Spotify Premium user in India, your subscription is about to get costlier. Spotify has officially raised the prices of all its Premium plans in the country — the first hike since the app launched in India back in 2019.

What Are the New Spotify Premium Prices?

Plan Old Price New Price Price Hike
Individual ₹119/month ₹139/month +₹20 (16.8%)
Duo ₹149/month ₹179/month +₹30 (20.1%)
Family ₹179/month ₹229/month +₹50 (27.9%)
Student ₹59/month ₹69/month +₹10 (16.9%)

The revised prices are already visible to new users signing up on Spotify. Existing subscribers will get notified via email when their billing cycle is set to change.

Why the Sudden Hike?

Spotify says the increase is part of a global price update across multiple regions, including India. The company cited rising operational costs and the need to continue investing in improved features and content for users.

Spotify’s costs have gone up significantly, especially related to employee salaries and taxes, which they refer to as "social charges." They also want to maintain profitability while enhancing the user experience.

What’s Happening Behind the Scenes?

Even though Spotify’s global revenue grew around 10% recently, it still posted a loss due to high expenses. This price hike is meant to help balance those costs.

In India, this marks the first price change since Spotify launched here more than six years ago. India is one of Spotify's fastest-growing markets, and the company hopes users will understand the need for this revision.

How Does It Compare with Other Music Apps?

Spotify faces tough competition from YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, JioSaavn, and Wynk. Interestingly, YouTube Music hasn’t raised its Indian subscription prices yet, which might tempt some users to switch.

Still, Spotify remains one of the most loved music streaming platforms, especially among Gen Z and millennials in metro cities. Its UI, algorithmic recommendations, and playlists like "Top 50 India" or "Hot Hits Hindi" are hard to beat.

Should You Keep Your Plan or Cancel?

If you’re a regular listener, the value might still be worth it. But if you’re on a budget, this price hike could make you reconsider. You could also switch to a Family or Duo plan to save money if you’re sharing with others at home.

Some users may also revert to the free plan or explore rivals. But so far, Spotify hasn’t seen major cancellations globally after similar hikes — thanks to its solid user base and content offerings.
